Telomeres and Anti Ageing
There has been much research and discovery surrounding health and anti ageing with studies looking at how our Telomeres can either increase or decrease longevity, health and ageing within our body. What exactly are Telomeres you ask? Well Telomeres sit on the end of our DNA strands acting as a protection for our chromosomes. Australian researcher and Noble Prize Winner, Prof Elizabeth Blackburn first discovered them.
Telomeres can vary in length. The shorter the telomere the more the DNA strands can be damaged which means our cells cannot do their job properly, this leads to cellular ageing. There is an enzyme called Telomerase which can create new DNA to the Telomeres which then lengthens them. This enzyme, Telomerase can be affected by a number of factors and it has been shown that leading a healthy lifestyle and managing our stress levels has proven to play a vital role in how the Telomerase and the Telomere function.
So what does Elizabeth Blackburn suggest we can we do to help our Telomerase and Telomere to function optimally?
Have a stress management plan.
Incorporate relaxation activities into your week.
Include movement and exercise into your daily habits, things like walking, swimming, gardening, playing with pets, stretching/yoga.
Eat more plant based foods everyday, include at least 5 servings of fruit and veggies.
Stay hydrated with water.
Drink alcohol in moderation.
Get adequate sleep-make sleep a priority.
Have social connectedness with friends and family.
Find a hobby you enjoy and look forward to engaging in it.
